The Citrusdal Wine Region is a sub-district in the west of the Olifants River Valley, 160km north of Cape Town in South Africa.

This area forms part of the Western Cape region and the official Citrusdal Mountain winegrowing area overlaps parts of the neighbouring Citrusdal Valley.

Citrusdal is a bustling rural village set amongst lush green citrus orchards, less than 2 hours leisurely drive from Cape Town on the N7 to Namibia.

The Town and surrounding area have much to offer visitors and we would like you to browse around and discover some of our unique settings, natural splendor and places with true country hospitality.

The months of May to September is an excellent time of the year to visit as the weather is cooler and September also brings the world-famous Flower Season to the area.

The Wines of the Citrusdal Wine Region.

The mountain’s varied terroir is particularly suited to the key Rhône varieties such as Syrah and Grenache, but also supports cooler-climate white-wine varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc that are marked by intense minerality.

Sitting between 500m and 700m (1,600-2,200ft) above sea level, the vineyards in Citrusdal Mountain are among South Africa’s highest.

This elevation means hot, dry days are followed by significantly colder nights, giving the berries time to cool down overnight.

The diurnal temperature variation leads to complex aromas in the wines without sacrificing acidity.

Sandstone and shale make up the soil profile of Citrusdal Mountain.

The excellent drainage afforded by these soil types means that the roots are forced to dig deeper for water and nutrients, which in turn leads to healthier plants and wines that demonstrate certain mineral characteristics from the soils.

Given the region’s strong affinity for Rhône varieties, and in particular Grenache, bush vines are not uncommon in Citrusdal Mountain.

This is especially true in the ward of Piekenierskloof, an unusual vineyard area with some of the Western Cape’s oldest vines, some of which were planted in the 1950s.

Things to do in the Citrusdal Wine Region.

The Citrusdal area is famed for its adventure activities.

4×4 routes are all around and the area receives many weekend visitors from the greater Cape Town area.

Rock climbing, hiking, mountain biking and freshwater angling are all very popular activities.

Citrusdal also offer guests a golf course and hot springs.

The spring wild flowers between August and September are an extremely popular time to visit and accommodation could all be booked up 1 year in advance.

Original rock paintings are also all over the area and is a great way to learn more about the area in times gone by.
