The Lutzville Wine Region forms part of the Olifants River Wine Region of South Africa.

Lutzville is a small village along this coastline, close to the fresh waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

This settlement is on the banks of the magnificent Olifants River, which makes for some beautiful views and excellent photographic backdrops.

This area was once inhabited by the Khoi people, who were an indigenous tribe of folk that survived as cattle farmers, using the produce of the land.

These people thrived on the banks of the river, where the vegetation was lush and the food plentiful. They had established their informal settlements when the European settlers arrived in the late 17th century.

This has lent the entire region an indelible history that has transcended time and development and continues to give the Western Cape a character that is quite special.

The river was so named after the elephants that once roamed these plains by the settlers.

Nearby towns and settlements include Vredendal (22 kilometres away) and Vanrhynsdorp (45 kilometres away).

Thanks to the fertile soils and appropriate climate, this region has become a popular spot for wine makers that have planted pretty vineyards here.

The Wines of the Lutzville Wine Region.

Lutzville Valley is a wine district located within the Olifants River region, at the mouth of the river itself, in South Africa ‘s Western Cape, 170 miles (270km) north of Cape Town.

This flat, sprawling vineyard area on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean boasts some of South Africa’s largest single vineyards.

Lutzville Sauvignon Blanc is attracting international acclaim, and Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon are all important grapes.

The vineyards of Lutzville Valley sit along the northern riverbeds of the slow but powerful Olifants River. The soils here are sandy and alluvial, with more gravelly soils on the gentle slopes.

The Atlantic Ocean, roughly 10 miles (16km) away, has an important influence on the wines of Lutzville Valley.

Warm sunshine and hot summer days are moderated by the cooling south-westerly breezes, lengthening the ripening period and allowing grapes to reach full phenolic ripeness.

Sauvignon Blanc from Lutzville Valley can develop classic cool-climate minerality and herbaceousness, while slower-ripening red-wine grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon have time to develop complex flavors.

The effects of the nearby ocean are keenly felt in the coastal vineyards.

Growers must choose their coastal sites carefully to fully optimize the salty air and harsh Atlantic winds. These wind-buffeted vineyards are resistant to fungal diseases because of increased air movement within the vine canopy.

The sea salt that coats the vine leaves also helps to prevent disease by increasing the levels of alkalinity in the plant.

In the 1700s, Lutzville Valley presented a land primed for exploration because of its rich hinterland and the elephants that roamed the area.

Explorers would take shelter in the bat-infested rocky outcrops overlooking the river and, over time, they realized the valley’s potential for agriculture.

Nowadays, Lutzville Valley is home not just to vineyards but also to other crops including potatoes and citrus fruits.

Many of the wineries are large-scale; the Lutzville Vineyards wine estate claims to be the second largest single estate operation in the country.

Within the Lutzville Valley viticultural zone lies the ward of Koekenaap, which is as famous for the blanket of wildflowers it produces in springtime as it is for its Sauvignon Blanc wines.

Just to the south-east of Lutzville Valley is Vredendal, another of South Africa’s important wine regions.
