The Paarl Wine Region of South Africa, also known as the Pearl of the Winelands, lies to the north of Stellenbosch and is bordered by the town of Wellington to the north-east and the mountains of the Groot and Klein Drakenstein and Franschhoek ranges to the south-east.

The Berg River, flanked by the majestic Groot Drakenstein and Wemmershoek mountains runs through Paarl and is the life-giving artery of this wine producing wine region.

What stands out for all to see when visiting Paarl is the towering Paarl Rock, the second largest giant granite outcrop in the world after Ayers Rock in Australia.

Located at the top of Pearl Rock is the Afrikaans Language Monument which offers breathtaking views of the Paarl Wine Region (on a clear day Table Mountain in Cape Town is visible).

The Wines of the Paarl Wine Region.

The Paarl Wine Route, renowned for its rich, full-bodied, spicy red and crisp white wines, is the 2nd oldest wine route in South Africa.

The area is best known for the quality of its Shiraz, the climate in particular favouring this variety.

Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinotage, Viognier and Mourvedre are increasingly well regarded.
