The Wines of the Swellendam Wine Region.
Swellendam, in the Breede River Valley, is a small Wine of Origin (WO) district in the Western Cape province of South Africa.
At its center is the historic town of the same name founded in 1743.
The two wine-producing wards in the Swellendam district are Buffeljags and Stormsvlei.
Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are the main white grapes grown here, and Chenin Blanc wine is also produced.
Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon are the prominent reds.
Sijnn Winery in Malgas is one operation which has diversified.
They have planted the Douro grape varieties Touriga Nacional and Tricadeira, plus Mourvèdre and Viognier from the Rhone.
The overall climate of the area can be classified as Mediterranean, with long summer days and mild winters.
However, the Langeberg mountain range has a more localized effect on vineyard growing conditions.
Swellendam wine district is located 218 kilometers (136 miles) from Cape Town – close enough for thousands of tourists to take a day trip.
There is an established wine route which visits Swellendam town, Bonnievale, Barrydale and Malgas.
A tour stops at around eight wine estate cellar doors or restaurants plus a brewery. (Source: https://www.wine-searcher.com/)
