The Vredendal Wine Region is located 310 kilometres north of Cape Town.

This relatively modern town is situated in the Green Fringe of the Olifants river valley. 

Vredendal with its developed infrastructure is home to the largest wine cellar in South Africa, as well as, a number of boutique wineries and a dried fruit depo’s.

Established in 1994 Vredendal is 310km North of Cape Town. 

Agriculture in the area include table grapes, raisins as well as excellent wines.

Renowned for its intricate irrigation scheme, the Olifants River allows for extensive agriculture in the area.

The Wines of the Vredendal Wine Region.

Vredendal is situated in the Olifants River Valley just north of the Cederberg Mountain range in South Africa’s Western Cape.

Located 20 miles inland from the west coast, about 310 kilometers (150 miles) north of Cape Town, the area is home to some of the country’s largest co-operative wineries and produces a multitude of wine styles from both red and white grape varieties.

Since these brands often use fruit from multiple regions within the Western Cape, the distinct Wine of Origin Vredendal rarely appears on wine labels.

The majority of the vineyards of Vredendal run along the banks of the Olifants River, and a limited number stretch up the gentle valley slopes nearby.

To the north and east is the semi-arid region of Namaqualand, which has a considerable effect on the climate of the region.

Hot, dry summers and mild winters mean that the growers of Vredendal must turn to the Olifants River for irrigation.

Vredendal’s marginal climate means that careful vineyard management is practiced throughout the region.

Leaf canopies are carefully pruned to shade grapes from the sun’s harsher effects, while still letting enough light through to ensure ripeness.

Harvest typically takes place early in the morning while the grapes are still cool and fresh.

Site selection is also vital, with red grapes flourishing on the hills and white-wine grapes performing well on the valley floor.

Loamy soils found on the valley floor offer a nutrient-rich base for the vines.

The hillsides offer gravelly, well-draining soils reminiscent of the nearby ‘Succulent Karoo’ semi-desert. This means the vines have to work harder for hydration, resulting in lower yields and greater flavor concentration in the grapes.

The huge co-operative wineries that operate in Vredendal have many thousands of hectares under vine, almost exclusively along the banks of the Olifants River.

These vineyards grow Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Ruby Cabernet and light, fruity, white-wine grape varieties such as Chenin Blanc and Hanepoot (the local name for Muscat d’ Alexandria).

Vredendal is also home to South Africa’s largest organic wine producer, Stellar Organics.
